What Is Otezla?
Otezla (apremilast) is a drug used to treat plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. While it provides symptomatic relief, it is not a cure. In individuals suffering from plaque psoriasis, Otezla has been shown to be effective in reducing major plaques on the skin. It is also effective at inhibiting the immune system responses that lead to the inflammation at the root of psoriatic arthritis.
Otezla has also been shown to be effective in treating individuals suffering from oral ulcers due to Behcet’s disease, a rare disorder that causes inflammation of the blood vessels throughout the body.
How Does Otezla Work?
Otezla is classified as a PDE4 inhibitor. Phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors block the action of various types of the phosphodiesterase enzyme found in the cells—a substance that contributes to inflammation.
Otezla is taken orally in tablet form. For the first five days, the dosage is ramped up to 30 mg per day and then maintained at 30mg over time. It can take the drug up to 16 weeks to reach peak effectiveness in reducing symptoms.
