What is Inbrija?

Inbrija (levodopa) is specifically prescribed for adults with Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease primarily affects individuals over the age of 60, but it can occur in younger adults, in which case it’s referred to as early-onset Parkinson’s disease.

Inbrija is not used as a standalone treatment but rather as a supplement to ongoing carbidopa/levodopa therapy when a patient is experiencing “off” episodes. These are periods when a patient’s regular medications are not working well, and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease return, such as increased tremor, stiffness, and slowed movement.

Inbrija is administered via inhalation. It comes in the form of a powder that is inhaled up to five times a day using a specific inhaler device provided with the medication. This mode of delivery is designed to rapidly deliver medication to the brain during an “off” episode.

What Does Simplefill Provide?

Parkinson’s disease is chronic and progressive, though the rate at which it progresses varies significantly. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the 14th most common cause of death in the United States is complications from Parkinson’s disease. Most people know someone who has it and has seen firsthand the devastating impact of the tremors, reduced ability to move, muscle rigidity, loss of balance, pain, and cognitive decline caused by Parkinsonism.

Living with the prospect of increasing disability can be very stressful emotionally as well as physically, and stress is known to exacerbate Parkinson’s disease symptoms. There’s no need to add the stress of worrying about the high cost of the prescription medications needed to manage the disease.

Patient assistance with the cost of Inbrija is available if you know how to find it. And Simplefill knows how. In fact, we are proud to bridge the gap between patients who need such assistance and the programs offering it.

How Does Inbrija Work?

The brains of people with Parkinson’s disease are deficient in the neurotransmitter dopamine. Levodopa is part of the standard treatment for the disease because it is a precursor to dopamine.

When inhaled, Inbrija delivers levodopa directly into the bloodstream, where it can cross the blood-brain barrier and be converted into dopamine. Quickly boosting dopamine levels helps restore motor function during “off” episodes.
