PDL-1 is referred to as a “checkpoint” protein because it helps keep the immune system’s T cells from becoming so active that they attack healthy cells, but that also makes it hard for T cells to recognize cancer cells as “invaders.” Imfinzi, a checkpoint inhibitor drug, essentially unmasks cancer cells so that the T cells can identify and destroy them.
