What Prescription Assistance is Available in Ohio?

Many Ohio residents are living with serious, sometimes progressive, chronic diseases such as end stage renal disease, cancer, COPD, dementia, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, and so on. And many of them are finding it difficult, even impossible, to meet the high cost of the medications they depend on to manage their diseases and perhaps prevent them from worsening.

They may be eligible for prescription assistance from the companies that manufacture the medications they need. Or they may qualify for prescription coverage through a government-funded health insurance program.

The Ohio Drug Card gives all residents of the state access to prescription discounts of up to 80%. The card is distributed at no cost. If you don’t have one yet, you can download and print a pre-activated one and start using immediately.

Ohio’s Medicaid program and the managed care plans it offers provide prescription coverage for low-income parents, children, seniors, and disabled Ohioans who meet the qualification requirements. Anyone who is enrolled in both Medicare and Medicaid will not be eligible for prescription coverage under Medicaid if they already are covered by Medicare Part D.

Some families with an income that exceeds the ceiling for Medicaid but can’t afford private or employer-offered health insurance may be able to enroll their uninsured children in Ohio’s Children’s Health Insurance Program, known as Healthy Start

The Ohio HIV Drug Assistance Program, OHDAP, provides HIV/AIDS-related medication at little or no cost to low-income Ohio residents living with HIV/AIDS who meet all of the eligibility criteria.

What Does Simplefill Provide?

At Simplefill, we’ve made it our mission to connect individuals in need of prescription assistance with the programs and organizations that offer such help. In fulfilling that mission, we bring much-needed relief from financial stress to those who are finding it difficult to maintain an uninterrupted supply of the medications they need to take for an extended period of time, perhaps indefinitely. And in doing that, we provide a measure of hope and a better quality of life for patients and their families.

How Does Ohio Prescription Assistance Work?

Ohioans can receive prescription assistance through two main channels:

  • Nonprofit organizations established by pharmaceutical companies to provide the drugs they manufacture at no or very little cost, to those who meet the eligibility requirements, or
  • Prescription coverage provided by federally and state-funded health insurance programs for low-income Ohioans.

If you are approved by a pharmaceutical company’s foundation, you’ll most likely receive your medication(s) free of charge for up to 12 months, after which you’ll need to reapply. If you qualify for a government-funded insurance program, you’ll be able to fill your prescriptions for either a small co-pay or no co-pay at all.

How to Get Prescription Assistance

Our process is designed to make very little demand on your time and energy. Once you apply for Simple membership either online or by calling us at (877)386-0206, the only other thing you’ll need to do is answer some questions during a brief telephone interview with one of our patient advocates. We’ll handle everything from that point on.

We’ll build your member profile using the information you gave our patient advocate during your phone interview. And then we’ll use your profile to identify the prescription assistance programs you should qualify for and benefit from the most.

We’ll apply on your behalf to the programs we’ve short-listed for you. And when you’ve been approved, we’ll get you enrolled without delay.

From that point on, we’ll monitor everything to make sure that you always have enough of the medications you need to keep your chronic medical condition under control. And if there is a change in your treatment plan that changes your dosage or adds new prescriptions, we’ll update your profile accordingly and find you additional prescription assistance if needed.

We’ll remain at your side for as long as you need us.
