What is Zenpep?
Zenpep (pancrelipase) is a combination of pancreatic enzymes prescribed for people who are lacking in them—primarily cystic fibrosis patients. The digestive enzymes produced by the human pancreas play an important role in the absorption of nutrients from food.
People with cystic fibrosis (CF) actually manufacture digestive enzymes in the exocrine cells of the pancreas. However, the thick, sticky mucus that is a hallmark of the disease blocks them from entering the small intestine. Consequently, food passes through the intestines without being fully digested, resulting in malabsorption, nutritional deficiencies, and difficulty maintaining a healthy weight.
