What is Remicade?

Remicade (infliximab) is a biologic, specifically a chimeric monoclonal antibody. It’s prescribed for the treatment of several different autoimmune diseases, such as:

  • Inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Psoriasis arthritis
  • Psoriatic arthritis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis

People with autoimmune diseases are victims of their own immune systems. The body mounts an immune response when there is no real threat, producing antibodies that attack the body’s own healthy tissues.

Remicade is administered by infusion, usually every six or eight weeks.  It can take a few weeks after the first infusion to begin to feel its effects.

What Does Simplefill Provide?

Autoimmune diseases can have a profound impact on one’s quality of life. Couple that with the high cost of biologics, and the resulting stress level can aggravate symptoms that are already distressing. Stress is known to aggravate autoimmune conditions.

Simplefill aims to alleviate the worry of paying large sums for the next Remicade infusion. We do this by connecting the people who need prescription assistance with the programs that can help.

How does Remicade Work?

A monoclonal antibody is created by cloning a unique white blood cell. All subsequent antibodies created in this manner can be traced back to that same white blood cell.

Remicade was originally developed from mouse cells. However, certain parts of that antibody were swapped out for similar parts of a human antibody to prevent the immune reaction that humans have to mouse proteins. That swap makes Remicade a chimeric monoclonal antibody because it combines human and mouse antibody amino acid sequences.

Remicade works by blocking the action of tumor necrosis factor-alpha, a cytokine that facilitates signaling between certain white blood cells, causing inflammation.
