What Is Shingrix?

Shingrix (recombinant zoster vaccine) is a vaccine intended to prevent shingles in adults 50 years of age and over. Only people who have had chickenpox can develop shingles. Older adults and people with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable.

Shingrix is administered by a healthcare professional in two intramuscular injections given two to six months apart.

What Does Simplefill Provide?

Most people who had chicken pox as children recover from the infection and remain blissfully unaware that the virus is hiding out in them, suppressed by their immune system. However, those whose immune system begins to weaken due to age or illness and develop shingles may feel its effects for years to come. The initial painful blistered rash often is followed by postherpetic nerve pain, or neuralgia, that can linger for and become a chronic condition. The Shingrix vaccine can prevent shingles and its painful complications, but only for those who can afford it.

It’s not common knowledge that there are patient assistance programs that can help with the cost of Shingrix and the costly medications often needed to manage chronic diseases. Simplefill has tackled that challenge by raising public awareness about patient assistance. And we’re proud of the role we play in connecting people that need patient assistance with the programs and organizations that can help them.

How Does Shingrix Work?

Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which remains dormant in the body for years after a chickenpox infection. The virus is kept at bay by the body’s immune system but can reactivate if the immune system can no longer mount a strong enough defense. Shingrix contains parts of the non-live virus—a single protein found in the outer shell of the herpes zoster virus—and an adjuvant that helps strengthen and lengthen the immune response.
