What is Pomalyst?
Pomalyst (pomalidomide) is prescribed for the treatment of multiple myeloma, a cancer of a certain type of white blood cell—plasma cells. Plasma cells play an important role in the immune system by producing the antibodies that fight infections. Multiple myeloma plasma cells migrate into and grow in the bone marrow, crowding out healthy blood cells, and inhibiting the formation of new bone cells.
Pomalyst is not used as the initial treatment for multiple myeloma. Rather, it is prescribed for patients who were in remission but have since relapsed. Specifically, it is prescribed for patients who have been treated with at least two other therapies but experienced disease progression within 60 days of the last treatment.
The active ingredient in Pomalyst, pomalidomide, is a derivative of thalidomide. This can cause fetal damage, so Pomalyst is not prescribed for pregnant women, and women taking Pomalyst must not become pregnant. Male patients taking Pomalyst must not engage in unprotected sex or donate sperm for 28 days after discontinuing the medication.
Pomalyst is taken in capsule form once daily on an empty stomach.
What does Simplefill Provide?
Simplefill provides a bridge between people who need prescription assistance and the programs and organizations that can provide it. In the case of a medication used to treat cancers like multiple myeloma, that bridge can be a lifesaver. Becoming a Simplefill member also gives patients fighting multiple myeloma the peace of mind that comes from knowing they will have an uninterrupted supply of the Pomalyst they need.
How does Pomalyst Work?
Pomalyst is classified as an immunomodulator, a group of drugs that cause the immune system to destroy cancer cells, or at least inhibit their growth. It also inhibits angiogenesis, the process through which new blood vessels form from pre-existing vessels. Angiogenesis, or neovascularization, occurs in the bone marrow of multiple myeloma patients and is a hallmark of disease progression.
