What Is Mestinon?
Mestinon (pyridostigmine) is prescribed to treat muscle weakness associated with myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disease, and certain other congenital and chronic medical conditions.
Mestinon comes in a liquid form and in extended-release tablets. Both are taken by mouth, with or without food, once or twice daily.

How Does Mestinon Work?
Normal muscle function depends on acetylcholine, which is released by nerve endings when they receive signals from the brain telling certain muscles to contract. The acetylcholine attaches to receptors on muscle cells, which trigger muscle contractions.
In people with myasthenia gravis, these receptors are damaged by the immune system, which attacks them as though they were invading bacteria. The acetylcholine cannot attach to the damaged receptor, which prevents the muscles from contracting. Mestinon slows the breakdown of acetylcholine by an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase, so that there is more acetylcholine available to attach to undamaged receptors, improving muscle strength.
