What Is Envarsus XR?

Envarsus XR (tacrolimus) is an immunosuppressant prescribed for adults who have undergone a kidney transplant to prevent rejection of the transplanted organ. The “XR” indicates that it is an extended-release medication. The intent is to maintain a steady level over 24 hours. It prevents the level of the active ingredient, tacrolimus, from becoming too high, which can be harmful. It is prescribed in conjunction with other anti-rejection drugs.

Envarsus XR is taken once daily, at the same time each day. It should be swallowed with water on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal, preferably in the morning.

What Does Simplefill Provide?

For people with end-stage renal disease, a kidney transplant is a life-changing event that frees them from needing multiple dialysis treatments every week. The greatest threat to a transplanted kidney is the possibility of rejection by the body’s immune system. Without an uninterrupted supply of anti-rejection medications such as Envarsus XR, the possibility of organ rejection becomes far greater. Living with that threat hanging over one’s head is extremely stressful and downright dangerous for transplant patients who can’t afford the high cost of the medications they rely on to prevent rejection. Even patients with prescription assistance can find their high out-of-pocket costs unsupportable.

Fortunately, patient assistance programs can make costly medications much more affordable for eligible patients. However, the existence of such programs is not common knowledge. At Simplefill, we are committed to raising public awareness about patient assistance and bridging the gap between people who need help paying for essential medications and the programs that can provide it.

How Does Envarsus XR Work?

Following an organ transplant, the body’s immune system perceives the transplanted organ as an “invader,” and the white blood cells will attack it just as they would attack a bacterial infection. The active ingredient in Envarsus suppresses the immune system’s production of white blood cells to prevent the rejection of a transplanted kidney.
