What Is Advair?

Advair is an inhaled medication used to prevent asthma attacks and to help control the breathing problems caused by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD (chronic bronchitis and/or emphysema). It combines two different medications, fluticasone and salmeterol, in an inhaler and is packaged in two forms:

·         Advair Diskus. A preloaded inhaler device containing measured doses, prescribed for adults and children over the age of four.

·         Advair HFA. An inhaler that contains a pressurized aerosol canister that delivers metered doses, prescribed for adults and children over the age of twelve.

While Advair helps to prevent acute asthma attacks and COPD flare-ups, it will not stop an attack once it begins. It is not to be used as a rescue inhaler.

What Does Simplefill Provide?

People with asthma, and/or the chronic bronchitis or emphysema associated with COPD must deal with the daily stress of a potentially life-threatening disease. They know that even with effective preventive medications like Advair, they can suffer a sudden onset of acute breathing difficulty with little or no warning. The last thing they need is the added stress of not being able to afford a prescription that Is essential to managing their disease.

There is financial help for patients who are uninsured or underinsured so that they don’t have to choose between paying for their prescription and putting food on the table. These are known as prescription or patient assistance programs. Simplefill can help you find and enroll in the programs that you qualify for to reduce or eliminate the expense of Advair and your other medications.

How Does Advair Work?

Fluticasone, one of the medications included in Advair, is a corticosteroid that helps fight inflammation in the body. Salmeterol, the other medication in the drug, is a beta2-adrenergic bronchodilator that relaxes the muscles in the airways. Together, these two medications make breathing easier and can prevent acute symptoms.

Advair is self-administered through inhalation, though younger children should not use it without adult assistance. It must be used daily, typically twice a day at about the same times each day, but that may be different for you. Follow your doctor’s specific dosage instructions.
