What Is Fibromyalgia?
Medical science is still searching for answers to the many questions surrounding fibromyalgia. It is a chronic disorder that sometimes (but not always) begins after a physically or psychologically traumatic event. The exact disease mechanisms are not completely understood, though researchers believe that the brain of a fibromyalgia patient processes pain signals in a way that makes painful sensations more severe.
In addition to widespread musculoskeletal pain, fibromyalgia is often associated with fatigue, sleep disorders (including sleep apnea and restless legs syndrome), localized tenderness, headaches, TMJ disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, and anxiety. Patients also report impaired focus and other cognitive issues collectively referred to as “fibro fog.”
There is no cure for fibromyalgia, but a number of medications are available that can provide some symptomatic relief.

How Do Different Types of Fibromyalgia Medications Work?
Of the three drugs approved by the FDA for the treatment of fibromyalgia, two are antidepressants— Cymbalta (duloxetine) and Savella (milnacipran)—and one, Lyrica (pregalbin) is an anti-seizure medication.
Other drugs are also commonly prescribed to treat the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Antidepressants, for instance, work by raising the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine, both of which help to control pain. Three main types of antidepressants may provide some pain relief for those with fibromyalgia:
- Serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). Two of the three FDA-approved medications for treating fibromyalgia, Cymbalta and Savella, are SNRIs. In addition to helping control pain, they address sleep and mood issues.
- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). These include Celexa (citalopram), Lexapro (escitalopram), Prozac (fluoxetine), Paxil (paroxetine), and Zoloft (sertraline). All of these medications can be helpful in relieving pain and depression.
- Tricyclic antidepressants. Tricyclics like Elavil (amitriptyline) have been around for a long time and can be helpful in addressing pain and improving sleep.
