Entresto, Tradjenta & Opsumit Are Going Generic | Simplefill

As medication prices continue to escalate, three drugs are going generic. They are Entresto, Tradjenta, and Opsumit. Despite the court battles that have ensued, the generic options will be available to patients soon. Learn more about the path that has led to the availability of these generic medications.

What Is Happening Between Novartis vs. MSN Pharmaceuticals?

Novartis, the Swiss company responsible for a life-saving heart disease medication called Entresto, took MSN Pharmaceuticals to court in an attempt to block this Indian company from selling a generic version of the drug.

Novartis’ patent expires in 2026, and MSN Pharmaceuticals could obtain U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval by July 2026. This would impact the company’s profits significantly. Nevertheless, the court is giving MSN Pharmaceutical the go-ahead.

Entresto is a medication that helps adults with chronic heart failure. It contains two medications that lower blood pressure, sacubitril and valsartan. People who benefit the most from this drug are those whose heart struggles to pump blood effectively around the body.

As things stand, it appears that MSN Pharmaceuticals will be launching its generic version in July of next year. Novartis plans to appeal the court’s decision, however, so there could be further delays in the process.

What Is Linagliptin? The Generic Version of Tradjenta

The active ingredient in the brand drug Tradjenta is linagliptin. It’s a medication that assists people with type 2 diabetes by preventing the breakdown of crucial hormones that stimulate the pancreas to release more insulin. The generic version provides the same results at much more affordable rates.

Although generic linagliptin has been approved by the FDA, it’s still not available in the majority of pharmacies. This has left people still depending on the brand, which is significantly more expensive.

Alembic Pharmaceuticals and Its Generic Opsumit Alternative

Opsumit is a prescription medication for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. Actelion Pharmaceuticals has patented this medication. Its active ingredient, macitentan, helps slow disease progression and makes exercise possible.

As of August 2025, Alembic Pharmaceuticals has received approval for its macitentan tablets, which are available in 10 mg doses. The medication has gone through a bit of a fight in the court system, but it is now technically available to patients. Some pharmacies still don’t offer it, however.

What Does More Access to Generic Drugs Mean for Patients?

Those who have chronic health issues that require long-term medication access, such as COPD and ulcerative colitis, can find it very difficult to afford the care they need. This is despite all of the efforts of past and current government administrations, including taking steps like signing the Most-Favored-Nation plan.

By making generic options available, those who are ill can receive the exact care they deserve. This is not just important for them. It’s also vital for everyone in the country. If they are unable to receive medications, diseases progress, which puts even more pressure on an already burdened healthcare system.

Generic drugs have saved the healthcare system trillions of dollars in the past decade, according to the Association for Accessible Medicine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Generic Medications Different From Their Brand-Name Counterparts?

The active ingredient in generic medications is the same as their brand-name versions. There may be inactive ingredients that are slightly different, which is why it’s always important to speak with your healthcare provider before switching, in case there are allergy concerns to be aware of.

Why Aren’t Generic Medications Available at My Pharmacy?

When the FDA approves a generic medication, it becomes an option that pharmacies can carry. This doesn’t mean that they all will. Additionally, if your physician has written a prescription that explicitly mentions the brand-name medications, the pharmacist will not be able to give you the generic. Your doctor will need to agree to it.

Why Are Brand-Name Medications So Expensive?

Pharmaceutical companies don’t have many price regulations they have to follow in the United States. They are for-profit businesses, so they are focused on getting all of their investment back.

They put a lot of money into researching medications, as well as in marketing and promotion. There are significant overhead costs these businesses must cover while also striving to make a profit.
