What is Eligard?

Eligard (leuprolide acetate) is a manufactured hormone used in the treatment of hormone-responsive cancers, specifically prostate and breast cancer. It is also used to treat other hormone-responsive conditions such as endometriosis, uterine fibroid tumors, and early puberty in both girls and boys.

Eligard is administered through a subcutaneous injection known as a depot injection. A depot injection deposits a medication in a mass called a drug delivery depot, to be absorbed into the surrounding tissue at a controlled rate over a period of months.

Eligard comes in two, separate prefilled syringes. One syringe contains the leuprolide acetate and the other contains a gel-like polymer delivery substance. The contents mix together and become one homogenous dose when the two syringes are joined just prior to injection.

What Does Simplefill Provide?

Receiving a cancer diagnosis is, needless to say, distressing. But advances in the treatment of prostate and breast cancers offer much hope—assuming, of course, that those treatments are not beyond one’s financial reach. Imagine how stressful it must be to know that survival can hinge on the size of your bank account or how good your prescription drug coverage is.

Simplefill aims to relieve the stress and uncertainty that go along with having a potentially life-threatening disease requiring expensive medications. We work hard to raise awareness about the availability of prescription assistance. Our goal is to connect those who need prescription assistance with the programs and organizations offering it.

How does Eligard Work?

Eligard is classified as an antineoplastic, GnRH Agonist. Its active ingredient, leuprolide acetate, is a synthetic version of a natural hormone. When continuously administered via depot injection, it inhibits the secretion of gonadotropins produced in the pituitary and suppresses the production of steroids by male and female gonads. The synthetic hormone is actually more potent than the naturally occurring one.
