What Prescription Assistance is Available in Tennessee?

There are two primary sources of prescription assistance available to Tennessee residents who must take costly medications for an extended period of time, if not indefinitely, to manage chronic diseases such as cancer, Parkinson’s disease, COPD, rheumatoid arthritis, kidney disease, inflammatory bowel diseases, or HIV/AIDS. Some patients may find help through the pharmaceutical companies that manufacture the medications they need, while others may be eligible for prescription coverage offered by a government-funded health insurance program.

The Tennessee Drug Card is a prescription discount card offering savings that average 30% but can be as high as 80% for some medications. It is available at no cost to all Tennessee residents with no other eligibility requirements. If you don’t have one already, you can download a pre-activated card from the Tennessee Drug Card website, print it, and begin using it right away.

Tennessee’s Medicaid program is called TennCare, which delivers services through a managed care model to Tennessee residents who meet all eligibility requirements.

Tennessee’s AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) provides prescription assistance for low-income uninsured and underinsured residents of the state living with HIV/AIDS. Anyone with HIV/AIDS who meets all other eligibility requirements can get their AIDS-related medications at little or no cost.

What Does Simplefill Provide?

Simplefill aims to make life a little easier for people with chronic diseases who are having to sacrifice other essentials to pay for the medications they need. Entire households can be affected by the financial burden of maintaining an uninterrupted supply of essential medications for a chronically ill family member. We know that prescription assistance is available, but not everyone who needs help is aware of that. So, we have made it our mission to serve as a bridge between people in need of prescription assistance and the programs and organizations most likely to meet that need.

How Does Tennessee Prescription Assistance Work?

The two main sources of prescription assistance provide help in different ways.

Pharmaceutical companies such as Abbvie, Johnson & Johnson, Sanofi, AstraZeneca, and many more typically establish nonprofit foundations to provide access to the drugs the company manufactures. Those who qualify for their help typically receive their medications for free or for a nominal cost for a certain period of time—usually 12 months. At the end of that time, they must reapply to continue receiving assistance.

Government-funded health insurance plans provide prescription coverage that pays all or nearly all of the cost of enrollees’ medications. Some government-funded plans carry no premium but may require a small co-pay (rarely more than a few dollars). Others require a small monthly premium but little or no co-pay for prescriptions.
