What Is Ibrance?

Ibrance is a targeted therapy for patients with hormone receptive positive (HR+), human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 negative (HER2-) metastatic breast cancer. It is not a traditional chemotherapy drug. Classified as a CDK 4/6 inhibitor, it is prescribed in conjunction with certain hormonal therapies (aromatase inhibitors) to slow cell growth, which affects both cancer cells and healthy cells. Ibrance has been shown to delay disease progression by more than two years.

Ibrance is taken for 21 days at a time, one capsule per day, for 21 days, followed by a 7-day rest period. This cycle is repeated for as long as continued treatment is effective and medically advisable. (Because Ibrance slows cell growth in both cancer cells and healthy cells, there can be significant negative side effects that mitigate against continued treatment.)

The full retail price for a 21-day supply is nearly $15,000 and varies by pharmacy. Even patients with insurance that covers Ibrance may find the copays uncomfortably high.

Who Is Eligible for an Ibrance Copay Card?

To be eligible for an Ibrance copay card, a patient must be a resident of the United States, the District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico and have private health insurance with prescription coverage for Ibrance. (The vast majority of private health insurance programs provide coverage for Ibrance.) There are no requirements to demonstrate financial need.

Those who are enrolled in a government-funded insurance program (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid, etc.) are not eligible to receive an Ibrance copay card. An exception may be made for a patient with Medicare Part A or Part B who also has private insurance coverage for Ibrance.

How Much Can I Save with an Ibrance Copay Card?

With an Ibrance copay card, your copays are completely covered, up to a maximum benefit of $25,000 per calendar year. The card may be used only once every 30 days and only at participating pharmacies. Once you reach the $25,000 limit, you will have to pay out-of-pocket for any remaining copays for the remainder of the year.

The current copay card program expires on December 31, 2022. Those who are ineligible for an Ibrance copay card may be able to obtain prescription assistance from another source.
